Personality is so much bigger than our outward behaviours.

A very non-useful delineation made it’s way into popular theory that personality was outward, and a person’s character was inward (i.e., private events, qualities, values and thoughts that shaped the personality). That it was easy to change a person’s personality, or that we could “fake it ’til we make it.” These unhelpful messages have created much confusion and inauthentic behaviours as a result over many decades.

Allow me to try to set the record straight.

Personality takes into account our whole person – inside and out. If you know what you are looking for, personality gives insight into our own selves, as well as a powerful window to others. It draws in our perception (the way we view the world), our communication style and channel (our preferred wavelength to connect with others), environmental and management style preferences (how we like to be interacted with), traits, character strengths, key psychological needs (how we are best motivated) and our distress patterns (observable signs when behaviours start going negative).

A personality model should also go on to explain why it is that some folk “phase” over time. These people are the same person as they always have been, but somehow they have changed. This is most noticeable at school reunions, or for friendships that have lapsed and been resurrected several years later.

Been to a personality-based training that didn’t explain any of these concepts? Very few do. Mostly they are non-evidence based and kick off with a sub-standard assessment or “profiling tool”. So, why should you invest in learning this stuff?

Your customers want to know that you understand them. They want a natural and easy flow and rapport, that can be easily established if you know how to assess their personality and connect with them. “What’s in it for me?” is an invitation for you to match your product to their psychological needs. Fail to meet their needs and you will find that the customer interaction takes a dive for the worse quite quickly, and you will end up without a sale.

Having the skills to individualise communication is an asset to any industry and any role. Unless your work is in isolation with a bunch of robots, you bump up against humans all day long. It would be a really useful idea to learn more about them!

Come along to a Process Communication Model® Seminar and gain new skills for life!

Would you like to learn how to:

Quickly establish and build an alliance with your clients?

Provide your clients with tools to communicate?

Motivate your team to stay on track and remain up beat?

PCM has helped big businesses to:

Increase profitability

Improve quality and workforce standard

Increase customer satisfaction

Reduce staff and customer distress

Improve team morale and job satisfaction

Increase customer loyalty

Reduce staff sick leave and turnover

PERFORM AT YOUR PEAK.

Minimising miscommunication is a plus no matter which way you look at it. Optimising communication within an organisation or company goes a long way toward changing the culture to one that is positive and more harmonious. If we can provide you with a skill whereby you and your colleagues can allow for and understand those on your team who “think differently”, then surely the power of those differences can then be enhanced rather than used as a point of difference, and at times conflict. Providing your team with a common approach to understanding and analysing human behaviour – the good, bad and ugly – generates a more united workplace and celebrates personality diversity.

We are in constant contact with other human beings. Our radar instantly detects and locks onto another person’s mood, intentions and way of communication. Our default style of communication is not necessarily the other person’s style. For example, the way that you ask for salt at the dinner table could determine if the salt is politely passed to you, or thrust in your general direction:

Could you please pass the salt?

Bob, pass me the salt, please.

This chicken is lovely Jenny, but it needs a little more seasoning.

Throw us the white stuff, babe.

Saying something to someone in a way that they struggle to hear can result in awkwardness at best, and utter rejection at worst.

Process Communication Model® (PCM) is a communication tool that teaches people how to recognise these subtle preferences in themselves and those around them. It is no good speaking English to a Mexican, just as it is no good asking questions to someone who prefers to be given direction.

Sometimes it feels like our cogs are humming along nicely and the world is a lovely place. But other times, life gets in the way and the spokes to our cogs can grind to a halt or spin right out of control! It is the management of each of these scenarios that is the key – how do I stay up, bright and perky, and if I am down, how do I get back up?

The Process Communication Model® ties together personality factors, communication styles, motivations, psychological needs and patterns of distress.

The model can accurately explain and predict what distress looks like for each person, how to engage them in motivating tasks (some people respond well to jumping out of a plane with a parachute and Go Pro, whereas others are satisfied with doing well on a work project, and others still feel refreshed after a luxurious massage), and how to communicate with individuals in such a way as to keep them in a positive headspace.

Process is the key in communication.

“We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.” –Epictetus

HOW DID PCM EVOLVE?

PCM has evolved from a concept developed in Dr Taibi Kahler’s undergraduate days at Purdue University, to now being a leading communication and management tool taught to millions of people worldwide, and often highlighted in business management and customer service training programmes. Dr Taibi Kahler’s Clinical Psychology degree enabled him to discover a process involved in verbal communication.

By Dr Kahler’s careful analysis of speech patterns he was able to propose a six-factor personality structure within each individual, which could assess, describe and predict both positive and negative behaviour. This discovery was extended to a clinical process for rapid psychological diagnosis, which won Dr Kahler the 1977 Eric Berne Memorial Scientific Award (kind of like the Oscars for Psychologists).

GROWING MOMENTUM.

Dr Kahler’s PCM theory has been enhanced over the years and is used in a variety of sectors today. Business and government agencies around the world are jumping on board this communication tool to assist with personnel selection, placement, and motivation, as well as office and customer management. Accurately determining the personality and potential of recruits and workers can help businesses in devising strategies that will best equip personnel with effective management skills.

NASA

In 1978, NASA invited Dr Kahler to demonstrate the efficiency of his model in the astronaut selection process. After comparing notes on several candidates NASA’s Lead Psychiatrist for Manned Space Flight, Dr Terry McGuire, hired Dr Kahler, commenting that a “process” approach revealed as much about a candidate in 10 minutes as a “content” interview of several hours. Dr Kahler continued to work with NASA for almost two decades, translating his concepts into what is now the Process Communication Model®, a non-clinical model for personality assessment, communication and management for businesses and individuals that UP Communication offers in its communication skills training programmes.

As a result of Dr Kahler’s involvement, the Process Profile Inventory (PPI) has been incorporated into the astronaut selection, evaluation, training, and management processes since the 1980’s.
PCM allows speedy assessment for effective hiring.

“Our mission statement is to significantly improve people’s lives.” -Dr Taibi Kahler

Relationships are hard. Having a shared language to communicate with your friends and family helps to equip you during the storms and amplify the good times.
When you come to a PCM course, you are walking away with a new skill. Communication in your personal life can flourish with the right knowledge. If you understand your strengths and can recognise when your buttons are being pushed, you will have more discretion to respond, rather than react to your partner, kids, siblings, in-laws, parents, and friends.

LOVE A HAPPY HOME.

If you can have a positive experience with your communication, and minimise miscommunication, the flow on effects to other realms of your life will soon become apparent. You can have an impact on the moods of the people you connect with and turn around a potentially hostile or confronting conversation into a pleasant and positive experience. How cool is that?

Improve your understanding in communication and experience less discord and more unity.

“The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said.”
–Peter Drucker

Circumstances notwithstanding, factors such as income, professional success, and quality of life are often commensurate to a person’s knowledge and skills. For this reason, most parents want their children to achieve their full intellectual potential. Proper development of your child’s intellect will enable him to make better decisions and become a productive and responsible citizen.

Intelligence is not determined entirely by genetics, however. According to a Forbes.com article, the environment in which a child is raised, as well as the rearing methods, can influence both his academic and social intellect to a considerable degree. In other words, effective communication goes hand in hand with good parenting when it comes to raising an intellectually well-rounded child.

Here are some tips that you might want to consider.

Encourage curiosity. Little kids are natural scientists in that they keep on seeking answers about the world around them. If you stop them from exploring things altogether, as opposed to merely supervising their safety, their minds are bound to be filled with limitations and fears, thereby curbing the desire for knowledge that leads to so many discoveries.

Inculcate a love of books. Encourage your child to read, read, read. Read to your child as early and as often as possible. This should stimulate your child’s imagination and creativity, and serve as the foundation for language skills.

Promote active discussion of ideas. Instead of simply bombarding your child with facts, pique his or her curiosity. Ask questions like: Why is the sky blue? What happens to your teeth if you don’t brush them properly? Why do kitties meow? Encourage your child to formulate his or her own explanation and then provide the facts in a language that he or she can understand.

Balance IQ and EQ. You’ve probably heard about people with high IQ who lack leadership and social skills. Emotional intelligence, which dictates how well a person interacts with others, is just as critical as academic excellence. To this end, a child psychologist interviewed for Forbes.com suggests exposing your child to everyday play and activities with other kids.

Do you feel like you could benefit from professional instruction on how to motivate and know more about your child? Personalised communication training under a team of experts, like those at UP Communication in Perth, can help you hone your already formidable parenting skills.

The bad boss stereotype: a shouting, red-faced and arrogant person, publicly shaming subordinates, tearing up reports heartlessly, and always on the hunt for someone to bully at whim. While some managers do fit the above description, more often than not, bad bosses are well-meaning people who are not entirely aware of their actions.

If you’ve ever felt the need to improve your leadership skills (or lack thereof), here are six indicators worth noting.

Do you admit to your mistakes? Managers often feel the need to project authority and confidence, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Claiming accountability for one’s mistakes, however, should not be seen as a sign of weakness. At all times, weigh your decisions carefully and see whether they serve the greater good rather than your ego.

Do you provide yourself (and your staff) clear and adequate directions? People find their purpose within the organisation more easily if they know how to contribute to a specific goal. Fickle-mindedness and the lack of goals can be demoralising. Be someone your people can trust to steer them towards a stable course.

Are you the ultimate controller? A boss prefers to micro manage and make all the key decisions. A leader, on the other hand, does not hesitate to seek inputs from employees who are better equipped to evaluate the situation.

Do you play favourites? It is only fitting to reward employees for jobs well done, but one should never hand out favours casually in a corporate environment as that would be downright unfair and de-motivating. Employees should be recognised based on their merits and contributions, not their perceived closeness to you.

Do you rule by fear or by example? Some bosses use intimidation to get things done. Those with bona fide leadership skills need not do so because their subordinates are satisfied and happy to work for them.

Do you give credit where it is due? Everyone wants to be praised for his or her achievements, but good leaders also know how to recognise those who helped them reach their milestones. Conversely, a capable leader takes responsibility for the team’s collective failings when things get out of hand.

Becoming a respected and well-loved manager or authority figure requires a thorough understanding of yourself as well as the social dynamics within the workplace. Consider your subordinates’ needs, give constructive feedback, and strive to establish a competitive yet positive atmosphere. Thorough knowledge of team building practices can be particularly helpful in this regard. Process Communication Model® experts, like those at UP Communication here in Perth, can equip you with the skills necessary to become the best leader you can be.

The typical workplace teems with all sorts of personalities, attitudes, and motivations. This diversity enriches but it can also be a source of conflict.

Unresolved conflict in the workplace can impact your business through decreased productivity, uncooperative behaviour, and attrition. According to research by the Queensland Government, 30 per cent of a manager’s time is spent resolving disputes in the workplace. Equipping your employees with the right techniques for effectively dealing with conflict in and out of the workplace can help your organisation overcome challenges along the way.

Listening Skills

Problems can’t be solved when people on both sides are throwing scathing words around. If you or someone who is equally capable can step up as the mediator and the voice of reason, you can let either party know that they are being heard and understood. This allows you to gather information, discover where the real problem lies, and work towards resolving the matter in a calm demeanour.

The Win-Win Attitude

A win-win scenario proposes a solution for the problems of both parties. That could be hard to achieve if no one is willing to resolve problems as a team. The goal here is to turn a dispute into a joint attempt to resolve the issues and make sure that both sides arrive at a favourable agreement. The mediator will have to initiate a joint problem-solving process and make sure that everybody is on the same page.

Positive Thinking

Negativity will simply do no good in the middle of a conflict and will only make matters worse. See that your team remains positive and focus on what you can do to overcome the problem. Think of it as a chance to learn, change things for the better, and avoid similar problems in the future.
Be the top-performing and harmonious organisation you were meant to be. Make sure your key personnel are all on the same page when it comes to dealing with negative communication. Effective conflict resolution and motivation training, as facilitated by a Process Communication Model® provider such as UP Communication in Perth, can equip professionals with essential skills.

Various factors come into play when it comes to business success. According to Business Review Australia, positive communication is a crucial element of business development. Entrepreneurs and employers who do not acknowledge this fact often fail to maximise their business’ potential for improvement. Simply put, positive communication should be a top priority if you want to attain success.

Learn more about the key areas where positive communication should be applied.

Employee Job Satisfaction

A happy employee is a productive employee, so goes the popular saying. Communication, a two-way street, is necessary for employees to feel empowered. The ideal environment is one where information flows upward, from the entry level positions to their superiors, and vice versa. Employees can give feedback freely to managers without fear of reprisal, while managers provide their direct reports including coaching required for professional growth.

Strong Business Relationships

At the heart of every strong business relationship lies good communication. Without this component, it would be difficult to forge lasting partnerships based on trust and transparency. Within your organisation, meanwhile, the ability to weave your core values and your overall vision into every aspect of your operations is what brings everyone together towards achieving a common goal. People subsequently feel motivated to be involved in decision making and contribute ideas for continuous improvement.

Team Development

Capable communicators have the power to boost employee morale, manage change, and enhance team cohesion. Better communication also enables workers to resolve conflict with greater ease, thereby minimising risks to the organisation. As an added benefit, effective internal communication can contribute to a good work ethic among your staff and remind them of the company’s goals and vision.

Organisational Growth

Attrition, absenteeism, poor customer service, and even negligence can all stem from poor communication in relation to company policies and procedures. By equipping key personnel with the essential communication skills, you can help protect your company from various internal and external threats.
Enable your business to achieve its goals and reach its full potential by tapping the power of positive communication. Business leaders would do well to invest in professional development and communication courses as facilitated by a Process Communication Model® provider like UP Communication in Perth.
